Senior Mental Health Program – 55+

At South Coast Global Medical Center, our caring team works collaboratively with families and loved ones through integrated programs that offer medical, social, emotional, and psychiatric support unique to the needs of seniors. According to a 2016 report by the Alzheimer’s Association, 1 in 3 seniors pass away with Alzheimer’s Disease or another form of dementia each year. This staggering number has further impassioned our hospital’s commitment to advancing the behavioral health resources available for our senior community members.

Our Senior Mental Health Program physicians and staff members treat patients with a variety of illnesses including mood disorders, acute psychosis, major depression, anxiety, and adjustment disorders of aging and early dementia. Our hospital provides individualized treatment programs for each patient and a variety of approaches such as group, individual, and family counseling. In addition, we provide new and innovative treatment modalities such as music, art, occupational, and recreational therapy.

The Senior Mental Health Unit is a voluntary program where Medicare and most health plans are accepted. Our inpatient program serves patients aged 55 years and older with acute behavioral issues. It includes individualized assessment and treatment planning, therapeutic daily activities, and comprehensive discharge planning. The multi-disciplinary team includes psychiatrists, internal medicine physicians, psychologists, social workers, psychiatric nurses, a registered nutritionist, physical therapist, and a recreational therapist.

We encourage family members to participate in decision making and discharge planning, as they are crucial to the treatment team and support for the patient. This promotes the patient’s progress and successful transitions post-discharge.  For more information on our Behavioral Health Program, please call (714) 633-0011 x1224.
